Greetings GO, first of all, I love your site. Please add this story to your Urban Legends page. I once saw Pearl Washington shake some guy so bad he dropped him, went by him and then instead of taking the shot went back to help him up. - Oklahoma.

D Black, a.k.a. The Black Stallion, place Hillside YMCA, Queens, NY. His team was getting blown out, he was pissed. DB a.k.a. BS from the left side above the foul line threw the ball off the backboard, 2 or 3 6'8" dudes went for the rebound while Black Stallion ran, leaped from the foul line, caught it off the glass and banged it with two. The fans went nuts! They had to stop the game. I was there! - Queens, NY.

Ray Haskins (from Brooklyn) was so tuff, when he went to the hole and got fouled he use to do push ups and then take the free throws. - Westchester NY

Yo, this summer at Dyckman Park, NYC I saw Bone Collector shake a kid so bad the kid fell into the stands, then BC went over and handed him the ball. - NYC.

St. Mary's had this kid Andre Williams a few years back. He dunked so hard in a game that the backboard shattered but that's only part of the story. The crazy thing is that for weeks kids who ran on the court to pick up the peices of glass were asking AW to sign them. One kid got caught selling them. - Long Island.

No one man could check FLY WILLIAMS. If you tried he got 40! - Brooklyn. P.S. - or 50!!

Artie Green. nuff said.

Please add this to UB page. Seen Eric Barkley get 30 at Entertainer's (155th). He was only 14yrs old. - Harlem.

Yo, the urban legend page is hot. I have so many stories to tell. To begin with, I had the opportunity to play on Fly William's team in the IS 8 Pro League. I actually seen Fly come to a game the second half, score 42 points, referee made a bad call, Fly took the ball and left before the game was over. I guess that was a Game Over moment. There was no better player than Fly Williams. - BROOKLYN NY

Place: The Bronx (Gun Hill Rd). I Peeped Dancin' Shane shake this dude, place the ball on the floor, and when the guy went to pick it up, Shane kicked it between the defenders legs, caught it on the other side, then went in for a 360 layup. Got it on tape! Da Bronx.

Got one for ya, GO. I watched Kerry Scurry block a guys shot into the stands, save it back in-bounds and then race back down court, caught an ill pass, and dunked in the face of the same guy that just got his shot blocked. The crowd went bananas. - Mt. Vernon, N.Y.

Who was the greatest NYC high school player? Well, some say Kareem, some say Albert King, some say Kenny Anderson. I don't know if this guy was the greatest, but he certainly was the most exciting and entertaining. Pearl Washington is who I am talking about. Every gym was packed to see Pearl do his thing. I seen Pearl dribble through a full court press, crossing over and shaking two defenders to the floor in the backcourt, then cross over on the big man to lay him for two. He was an incredible high school player. - Brooklyn, N.Y.

Best move ever!!!! His team down by 2 points, - I saw this cat in the Bronx, Co-op City, in the Jerome Pickett tourney cross over on the opposing point guard (who stumbled into his backcourt partner), then he put the ball between the legs of the forward doing all this at full speed, no lay up here, he pulled up for a three - all net!! GAME OVER!!!! The point guard??????
None other than GAME OVER president and CEO ------- Eric Hicks. - Cliff Gonzalez - Co-op City / Riverbank

Another TRUE "Pearl" Washington story!!! My wife was due to give birth any day. I was living in Tampa, Florida. The Miami Heat were playing their first game ever in the new Miami Arena, it was exhibition opening night 1988. I took the chance and drove 5 1/2 hours to see the "Pearl" do his thing. My wife thought I was crazy - but she came with me - I can't remember the team or the players but they tried to press the Pearl. LOL! Pearl went along the side line on the left (he alway went left - ask Mark Jackson), split 2 defenders by rolling the ball between them and then scooped up the ball and threw a blind pass to Rony Seikaly for an easy dunk. I jumped out of my seat and the 5 1/2 hour ride home was easy. Thanks for all the memories Pearl. - Cliff Gonzalez - Riverbank

Two stories for ya! A few years back at IS 8 I watched Ron Artest punk the whole Riverside Squad. That's right, during a timeout he walked over to the Riverside bench and asked . . . "If you guys are so good why are you playing a zone"? He then replied, "Cause none of you can check me"! Ron then scored 30 or 40 points and beat Riverside by himself. Year or two later I watched Smoosh Parker do the same at Roberto Clemente State Park. I guess if you want to be an Urban Legend you got to do it against the best. Riverside is still # 1. - NYC

No disrespect to the Pearl but for tricks the Bone Collector is the greatest of all time. I saw BC at one time or another put the ball between the legs of everybody on the other team. They know it's coming and still can't do anything about it. Gun Hill, Da Bronx. Peace!

If ya ain't seen Booga ya ain't seen nothing. Let'em know Brooklyn! Holla Brooklyn NY.

Hey GO, It's AJ straight out of Brooklyn, and much respect to this new site. I have an Urban Legend for you. Mark Brown, AKA: Doc of FES Academy once dropped 56 on Moses Scurry in the BRC, and anyone who saw Doc play would rank him right up there with the Pearl and Fly Williams. - AJ FES Academy class of '86

Centennial Park, Roosevelt, N.Y. - Nickname L.I. Rucker. Circa summer, mid 1980's. I witnessed Curtis "Smooth" Hammond make 13 shots off the backboard in a row from 25 to 30 feet out and they did not have a 3 point line! The bank was open late that night!

New Editions!

Is this true? Yet another Fly Williams story. Fly plays the first half of a game, drops 36. He gets pissed off at his team, switched to the other team and in the second half hit 42 against the team he started the game with. Say it ain't so! - Brooklyn.

Two summers ago I saw Jamal Tinsley wreck every guard at the entertainers tournament. So much for all the guys with the stupid nicknames. P.S. - none of them are in the league . . . Jamal is! Game Over. - Kev, Harlem.

Ray Diaz, aka X-Ray, hit 7 straight 3's on a bad ankle up in the boogie down this summer. The kid's 4 real. Holla back! - The Bronx.

Game Over note: We got this story twice in one week so here it goes . . . Seth Marshall faked left and crossed some guy (we know his name) so hard right that the guy fell and slid up under his teams bench. In fact, it took 3 teammates to pull him out. OUCH! This story has been stamped VERIFIED! - Brooklyn.

World B Free, during his high school years at Canarsie High School, was known as Lloyd Free. Well, you talking about getting up high on a jumpshot. Today, I don't know of any other player that jumps as high World did on his jump shot. I'll never forget when Canarsie played Jefferson H.S. at Canarsie, World vs. Phil Sellers. We ran our usual double stack play, where World would come off a double screen for a jumper in the corner (no three pointers then). As World came out to the corner, big Phil Sellers switched, and as World went down to set up for his jump shot, Both Phil and World jumped the same time. Phil had perfect timing to block World's jumper. After Phil reached his peak, World continued to raise and raise. Not only was World up so high, his shot was arched to the ceiling. When World finally released, Sellers ran into him knocking him to the floor. The shot went in as World fell into the packed stands. The capacity crowd went absolutely crazy. Still today, I can't believe how high he jumped for a jumpshot.

Hey, you know who had the most deadly cross-over dribble? Ted Gustus. Yes, the coach of Bishop Loughlin High School. His cross-over was so great, the fans use to call him hummer when he played in college. Whenever they wanted to see someone victimized by his cross-over dribble, the entire gym began to make the humming sound. One year Gustus was playing in the unlimited league at I.S.8, he was 38 years old then. Throughout the evening Gustus was killing guys with his cross-over dribble. When a player from the other team came late, he immediately came into the game. Of course he came in to check the guy with the salt and pepper hair. The I.S.8 announcer said, "Oh no, you don't want to come to the game late and check him". The player insisted on guarding Gustus. Gustus hit him with his custom cross-over dribble. The player spun around and fell to the floor, as Gustus went by for a lay-up. To top it off, the crowd went absolutely crazy when Gustus's wife yelled out to the player, "Are you alright?, Ted help him up!"

This e-mail is just in from Albany: There's some kid up there they call "The Egg". Story has it he spent his summer "crackin' dudes". - Albany, NY

Sometime ago I watched this guy name Harry Dinkins, a.k.a. the "Mayor", pull off a 1 in a million defensive stance. It was in the Bronx at MMCC. Off a missed shot this guard takes off for a breakaway layup. "The Mayor" takes off after him, catches up and punches the ball out of the air and off the side of the backboard. The ball flys out the side door down the hall and UP the stairs. The very next play, off a steal, the same guy gets another breakaway and once again "The Mayor" laid down the law. The shot was punched out the same door and down the same hallway. The no layup rule was in effect. True story! - Bronx, NY

Hey Game Over! Man, love your site, saw it when I did a search for uniforms. Man, this Urban Legends page brings back memories, and I have a few "back in the day's". One of my favorites is a NYC PSAL playoff game held at Bryant High School between Taft and Fort Hamilton back in 1977. That was back when NYC had some of the greatest talent in their public schools. This game had two of the greatest, Albert King and Artie Green. While Artie never had the pro career Al did, man, he was the man in NYC when he played. Al went off for 36 in the first half of the playoff game to put Fort Hamilton up by about 20 at the half. And then the Taft coach put Artie on Al for the second half. Not only did Artie shut down Al to 4 points the rest of the game, Taft came back and won. Great game and great memory of my "Urban Legend" - Artie Green. - Bronx, NY

A Bronx Tale - Part 1. We have all played on the school gym baskets that have to be cranked down from the ceiling in order to be used. I once saw a kid named Mike Allen (Truman High School) dunk in a game so hard that the basket swung back up against the ceiling and had to be cranked back down to continue the game. He's was only 6'2". True story. - Bronx, NY

This page might be the best thing to happen for us hoop junkies in years. Much respect to you old schoolers, but the guards today I'm sure could hold their own with anybody. Exapmle: I'll Be Right Back" (that's his nickname) could be the fastest man to ever pick up a ball. For two summers I've watched this 5'6" cat run circles around defenders. I never saw Tiny in his prime but right now "I'll Be" is the man! - NYC. - P.S. right now Irv, a.k.a. I'll Be Right Back is a B student at Albany U.

Ask Ray Haskin about the Utley Brothers he played with one at Shaw U. Unknown.

If you think Curtis Sumpter had game, his father Curtis Sumpter Sr. was the truth. I watched him play at 198 in Far Rockaway on the same team as Curtis "Smooth" Hammond where they called Smooth Curtis Jr. - LI, NY
