Saturday, July 19, 2003 & Sunday, July 20, 2003
Once again it was another exciting weekend at 41 park. Saturday was almost a full day. The Tigers and UNC played the first game starting the Midget Division. UNC started off with the cheer, “ Win! Win! Win!” In the beginning it was a tight game with a slight possibility of Tigers taking the lead but UNC held on to it. The final score was 19- 37. The next game was 41s Vs Nathaniel “Iceman” Williams’ Blazers. The Blazers had lots of slick passes, dribbling and faking. It wasn’t enough. The first quarter ended with 21-6. The 41s did not let go of this lead and the final score was 37-11. The 12:30 game was a forfeit, so the Cut Kings won. KYDA Inc. Vs RG’s coached by Rich Gil, was the game that kept everyone on the edge of the benches on Saturday. In the beginning Rich Gil’s scored the first couple of points and led KYDA Inc 11-7 at the end of the first quarter. At the half the score becomes tied and then yet again during the 3rd. RG’s broke the first and KYDA Inc. broke the latter with a thunderous applause from the crowd. Since the half the RG’s hit sort of a slump and had trouble making shots. KYDA Inc. stayed in the lead but did not get too far away from RG’s. RG’s arose from slump and slowly crept up to KYDA inc. With 1 minute and 15 seconds left the score was 30 up! Soon there was 45 seconds left and the tie was broken by yellow. The kids sense time putting the pressure on them and they play harder each one either trying to maintain their winning status or snatch it back. One second is left and a yellow team member is fouled. RG’s win 33-31. The day’s Ladies Division game was played by KYDA Inc. and Pelham Fritz/Harlem coached by Paul Hardy. Hardy’s team won it 33-11. The first Junior Division game was a very emotional game. Bob Jones’ WALA pressed Impeccable Gear early, but at the end of the first WALA was losing 12-7. Coach Terry Henderson’s team was getting upset because some kept missing their jump shots and WALA was catching up and during the 2nd it became 14-14. Soon WALA led and then Impeccable Gear took it back in the 3rd. In the end WALA had the last laugh with the final score of 38-32. Wiz Kids and Co-Op City’s 5th Squad played the last game of the day. The final score was 30-20.
The first Sunday Midget Game was played by Tigers and RG’s. It started of slow but ended with a race against the clock. RG’s won with 35-25. UNC beat KYDA Inc. The final score was 20 –43. Saunders faced KYDA Inc. and these ladies dominated with 47-13. UNC Vs 41s started the Juniors Division. 41s won with their strong come back 39-35. The last game was played by WALA and Wiz Kids. The final score was 21-25 in favor of the Wiz Kids.

Opening Weekend At SETE

Sports Excellence Through Education’s (SETE) annual summer tournament began on Saturday, July 12, 2003. It was a pretty slow day due to one rescheduling and two forfeits. However, the games were interesting. The “home” team in the Midget Division, 41s, coached by Jamel “Muscle” Flemmings blew Levon Fullmore’s Cut Kings away 58-18 in the first game of the tournament. Harlem beat the Blazers because they did not show. In our Ladies Division Pelham Fritz/ Harlem had to forfeit due to not having enough players. The Junior Division was started with the Wiz Kids led by Arnold Fields vs. UNC coached by Jamel Rosario. The game was close but ended 59-44 in favor of UNC, which stands for Unity Neighborhood Community Center. Another close game was WALA coached by Bob Jones vs. Flemmings’ older 41s whose score was 25-32 in favor of the 41s. Co-op City’s 5th Squad headed by Lawyer Alexander and Terry Henderson’s Impeccable Gear played the last game. Before the game Henderson said, “I watched two teams play and they scored twenty points and if my team scores twenty or thirty points, I’m forfeiting the rest of the games.” They won the game with 53 points and Co-op City had 34. Impeccable Gear’s other Coach, Carlos Rivera still wasn’t too happy. “They didn’t play to well, they didn’t rebound or execute the press…there’s more to come though… our future looks really good.

Sunday, July 13 marked the second day of the tournament and the end of the weekend. It held the most interesting games and everyone showed up. The first game of the Midgets Division was played by Rob Hall’s Tigers and Oz Cross’s KYDA Inc. What started as a close game soon became a loss on the part of the Tigers, 18-32. At 11:30 am Rich Gil’s team played UNC and lost. The next game was the Cut Kings vs. Ivan “Ice Man” Phipps’ Blazers. The final score was 24-30. After a tie in the 3rd quarter the Blazers took their win back. There are two highlight games of the weekend, which both happened on Sunday. It was the 41s vs. David Daise’s Harlem. It started as a 10 –15 point lead held by Harlem through the first three quarters. During the second quarter Coach Flemmings was ejected from the game as a result of receiving a tech for arguing with the referee. In the last quarter another tech was issued to a player of the 41s team because he cursed at a player on the Harlem team. In the fourth quarter Harlem raced to maintain their lead and the 41s raced to steal it. This resulted in fast moves, dribbling and fouls. Three of the seven members of the 41s present that day fouled out. A Harlem player fell so the teams played four-on-four. 41s played hard but weren’t fast enough for the clock, which caught them when the score was 29-33 in favor of Harlem. After the game Flemmings had plenty to say, “…inexperienced referee refereeing the game.” The referee who he was referring to, Mardy Gbotoe had this to say, “He wanted a foul, came at me and screamed at me from the base line. I don’t tolerate [this kind of behavior].” Then another exciting game was in the Ladies Division. Lisa Field’s Wiz Kids played Coach Vic Hall’s KYDA Inc. It started out really fast paced. The Wiz Kids have incredible dribbling skills. There were behind the back passes and dribbling. You could tell the Wiz Kids have practiced a lot. They had a very interesting chemistry. They’re attracting more people to the tournament. The balcony and stairs were full during the whole game, which hasn’t happened this year. All things must come to an end as this game did. Wiz Kids won with 41 to KYDA Inc.’s 27. In the Junior Division the 41s beat Impeccable Gear 47-45. Flemmings surrounded by friends and members of the 41s said, “The trophy stops here, in 41, where it belongs.” The final game of the weekend was UNC vs. Co-op. Rosario’s team won 45-35.
