From the makers: In Ireland some 70 medieval castles, churches, and buildings carried stone sculptures of a nude female figure with legs drawn up and spread apart: startling evidence of belief in the protective power of woman's creativity. This also occurred in Lithuania where effigies of frogs and toads (cf. leg posture) were attached to buildings. They were sacred to the prehistoric Frog Goddess who presided over death and birth. The S. is invariably ugly and, as with the crone or hag, her power lies in her experience and wisdom. Having at some time allowed man to penetrate her, she now devours him, or having born him now buries him. (cf. Indian Kali). This is 'enantiodromia', a great psychological truth, ruling all aspects of life, that everything that exists eventually revolves into its opposite.
