CATHOLOCISM & JUNGIAN PSYCHOLOGY

This book is available Today to order.
Catholicism and Jungian Psychology is a rare example of a cooperative venture done right. Created by an ecumenical group of twenty-one renowned Jungian analysts, psychologists, and scholars from many religious traditions. Filled with thought-provoking material that is both timely and timeless.
J. Marvin Spiegelman, Ph.D.

From the editor: Jung would have been astonished, I think, were he to know that there are not only a number of Jungian analysts who are also priests, but that his psychology is also taught in many seminaries. In an early paper on "Psychotherapy and the Clergy", Jung stated his opinion that increasing numbers of people would seek psychotherapy as the institutional churches lost adherents. Many have sought analysis, to be sure, but a great number maintain their institutional connection and not a few can be both priest and psychotherapist, "religious" and Jungian analyst. I, myself, have had the good fortune to work analytically with a number of Catholic religious ever since I returned to Los Angeles after finishing my training at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich in 1959. Indeed, since about 1961, I have encountered an unbroken line of such people in my practice, one becoming an analyst and many others continuing their pastoral or therapeutic endeavors in a deepened way.

That I would be privileged to do such work was presaged by a dream I had. I dreamt that I was deeply engaged in conversation with Jung when he was called away to speak with the Pope. At the same time, I was summoned to do analysis with an Italian man who had been very creative (poems and paintings were at his side), but who now had to go more deeply into the issue of love. I understood that dream as my work with my own shadow at a personal level, while the collective work of the "wise man" Jung and Pope), were simultaneous. In my dream, it was understood that Jung and I would meet again. Perhaps we are doing that in this very book!
