John Amira & Steven Cornelius
from the editor:
This book presents the salute (or praise) rhythms of bati drumming, the most sacred and complex of the ritual music associated with the Afro-Cuban religion, Santeria. Salute rhythms are concise, highly distilled musical prayers, each of which honors and represents a different one of Santeria's many gods (orichas). Every salute is unique, with its own particular rhythmic and emotional character. Together, the salutes form one of the cornerstones of Afro-Cuban drumming.
This text is written primarily for the performing musician who looks to expand his knowledge of Afro-Cuban music traditions. However, a much wider audience will also find this book rewarding, including: the musicologist who might be interested in the formal structure and mechanics used to generate contemporary bats performance; the practicing Santero who wishes to better understand ritual music; and the general reader seeking an introduction to the music of Santeria.
The book is divided into four chapters. Chapter One provides a background into the social history and belief system of Santeria. Chapter Two introduces the musical instruments, and Chapter Three discusses general structure and performance techniques. Chapter Four consists of musical transcriptions and analyses. The transcriptions, which are designed to serve as models for performance, outline the salutes as they might be heard in religious or folkloric settings.
Santeria is a religion that has its roots in Africa and Cuba, combining West African religious traditions with Catholicism. Music is central to the religious philosophy.
In this illuminating guide the authors transcribe the concise, highly distilled musical prayers of ritual bata drumming. They also detail the belief system of Santeria. Theirs is the only English language book on what has long been a strictly oral tradition.
