According to Pet Industry Magazine, there are 70 million American households with pets; a Gallup poll reported that a majority of these regard their animals as members of the family. For many, it is an emotionally wrenching experience when these beloved companions die, something those who have never been close to an animal cannot understand.
While belief in human immortality is strong, few people have more than a vague hope their animals will survive beyond death, finding little support in religion or science. In the early 1990s, I asked readers of several magazines to send me experiences, which might have a bearing on this subject.
I was stunned by the response. Rather than "ghost stories" you could dismiss as the result of overworked imaginations, the reports that came in were amazing in their variety, complexity and credibility. Skeptics who would be eager to debunk the encounters as the result of the wishful thinking of grieving pet owners will be sorely disappointed. Experiences were sometimes lengthy and multi-sensory, occurring to perfectly normal people who usually did not have supernatural experiences of any kind. One is left with the distinct impression that something very real, if unusual, did occur and it is quite difficult to explain these experiences away.
