In the Germanic Museum there is a manuscript which contains the illustrated text of Lammspring, which probably served as the original for the Frankfort printers. Historically, Lammspring himself cannot be identified. Maier was of the opinion that he was of noble birth, but Schmieder suggests that he was a monk of the Benedictine abbey of Lammspring, near Hildesheim-so-called for the Lamm, a streamlet which has its spring within the Abbey garden. Schmieder also surmises that the allegorical figures are an imitation of those of Flamel, and that the Author therefore studied in Paris. He refers to the oldest known printed edition of the work, the Triga Chemica: de Lapide Philosophico tractatus tres, editore & commentatore Nicolao Barnaudo Delphinate Gallo, Philosopho & Medico (1599)...
