Lavender is the fantastic herb of Mercury and Air is known and loved for its calming, restorative effects. In the Temple of King Solomon, it was one of the herbs regularly used. Romans brought lavender to Europe; planting it where they went so they might always have a supply. It is an aid in sharpening vision and clarifying thinking, which makes it an excellent herb for scholars. The dried flowers are the most powerfully scented part and can be used in herbal sleep pillows to help against insomnia, added to soaps for a gentle and fragrant exfoliation, or to bath water to decompress after a demanding day. Lavender herb is also good to incorporate into ritual spells concerning love. It is usually associated with midsummer festivals.

General information: Lavender has both stimulating and sedative properties. Drinking lavender tea or inhaling the flowers helps calm the nerves, relieve headaches and promotes rest. Make a small pillow filled with lavender buds to rest your head on when you are upset or having a difficult time going to sleep. A chilled lavender and flax seed pillow gently lying across your forehead and eyes will help relieve headaches and sooth sore eyes.

A tea brewed from Lavender tops, made in moderate strength, is excellent to relieve headache from fatigue and exhaustion, giving the same relief as the application of Lavender water to the temples. Distilled water made from Lavender has been used as a gargle and for hoarseness and loss of voice. Lavender was used in earlier days as a condiment and for flavoring dishes 'to comfort the stomach.
