History and Traditional Uses
Cayenne, or capsicum, comes from the Greek Kopto, meaning "I bite." Bite into a hot pepper, and you'll know in a flash how powerfully stimulating this herb can be.

In sixteenth-century England, cayenne was noted as a remedy for what was then known as king's evil an infection of the lymph nodes in the neck. And later, among American herbalists, cayenne was an herb of choice for treating everything from cold feet to dropsy (fluid accumulation) to rheumatism.

Healing Potential
Cayenne contains vitamins A and C along with the alkaloid capsaidn. Considered a powerful stimulant and irritant, capsaicin produces an intense burning sensation when it touches the mouth, eyes, or tender skin. The sensation signals the brain to secrete endorphins, feelgood substances that block pain, induce well-being, and sometimes create euphoria.

Evidence shows that creams containing capsaicin effectively relieve a variety of painful conditions, including shingles, postmastectomy pain, nerve pain caused by diabetes, and even cluster headaches. Added to food, cayenne perks up the appetite, improves digestion, and relieves gas, nausea, and indigestion. The herb thins phlegm and eases its passage from the lungs, thus helping to prevent and treat coughs, colds, and bronchitis.
