Darcy Kuntz
from the editor:
At the turn of the last century in England and Scotland there existed a small, obscure group of occultists which was called the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Its membership was never large and by the time of its collapse in 1903 into three schismatic groups only a few hundred men and women, divided amongst several "Temples," had passed through its system of occult training. By the late 1930s all but two of the schismatic Temples had become moribund. The last English Temple, located in Bristol and known as "Hermes," was closed in 1963 leaving only a Temple in New Zealand to struggle on until its own formal closure in September 1978.
While the Golden Dawn undoubtedly sought to increase its membership it was never intended, unlike the Theosophical Society, to be an organisation for the masses. Indeed, it was a secret society and every detail of its activity and the identity of its members was supposed to be kept secret from everyone outside its pale. Stated somewhat simplistically, the purpose of the Golden Dawn was to provide to specially selected candidates a system of occult training which would enable them to acquire magical powers and eventually lead to their spiritual illumination.
The Golden Dawn was not unique in this regard for during the same period and for a few decades after many similar organisations proliferated throughout the Western world, notably the United States. Yet none of these groups, some of which attained considerably larger membership, achieved even a fraction of the significant influence which was later to emanate from the teachings of the Golden Dawn. This is not the place to demonstrate the evidence for such pervasive influence and a full case for this assertion must await another occasion. Nevertheless, it can be stated without any fear of controversy that the effects of the Golden Dawn curriculum upon virtually every aspect of Western occult theory and practice was and is nothing short of immense...
