INDIVIDUALY CRAFTED OF IRELANDS ANCIENT BOG
The integrity of detail, the ancient bog material of Irlend and craftsmanship all make this a great Celtic Icon of The Emerald Isle.
Possibly commissioned by Muiredach, abbot of the monastic settlement of Monasterboice, County Louth, in the early 10th Century. The cross, cut from fine grained sandstone, is regarded as the finest of all the High Crosses of which more than one hundred are scattered over Ireland.
Sometimes referred to as Bibles in stone, they were used to instruct the unlettered by the use of their very comprehensive doctrinal illustrations, and to decorate and mark the bounderies of the monasteries.
