Native people of the southwestern United States scratched or carved images of Kokopelli, the humpbacked flute player, on canyon and cave walls as long ago as 200 AD. Stories have been told and retold about Kokpelli for centuries.

In Kokopelli, Drum in Belly, Gail Haley interprets and retells the story of Kokopelli. Her vivid paintings illustrate how Kokopelli leads the Ant People from the Dark World into the light and enlightenment of the Green World where they become the first people.
